ABHIGYAN — A TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR EXECUTIVE MEMBERS OF THE UNION

Culture is the core of any business and Passion is the core of any Company. If an organisation exists for more than a century, it must have a very strong culture and value system. Merely production, cost and quality do not decide the life span of any Company, but the value, on which the Company runs, also play a vital role in its existence. Tata Steel has survived for more than a century and still it is flourishing. Amongst the important factors which enabled the Company to survive, its rich cultural heritage and strong value system are the most important.

Tata Workers Union is one of the oldest and strongestUnions of the world and founder member of the trade union movement in India. It has also faced taught situations butalways stood for the cause of the employees as well asfor the Organisation. The Union is about 98 years old andits guiding principles laid down by its ancestors, the richculture and value system have always strengthen the Unionunder any adverse situation.

These all practices and principles of both Union and
Management have collectively benefited the Organisation, the Employees and ultimately the Nation.A healthy Union is an Asset for the Management and Union Executive Committee members are the front line soldiers of not only the Union but also the Management.

A skilled, well informed and alert Executive member is a boon for the organisation. Many of us are not aware of the story of the struggle byour ancestors. We must know in detail the values and the guiding principles which has helped the Organisation to survive in this age of competition. This programme “Abhigyan” has been designed to educate and impart basic knowledge to the Union Committee Members regarding the Values and Culture of Tata Workers Union as well as Tata Steel, their history and how they struggled together to safe guard the interest of the workers, the organisation and the Nation. They should be aware of the attributes of a successful and alert Union Committee Member. The above programme was launched and inaugurated by Mr. T. V. Narendran, CEO and MD Tata Steel on 21st Nov. 2016. All Executive Committee Members of Tata Workers Union are covered under this programme.

JDCs, since their inception in 1956, have travelled a long way and achieved many mile stones as per the need of the organisation. It has started its journey from “Hand holding”, followed the principles of “ Participation”, partnered the various ventures of progress and now at the stage “Ownership”, owning the challenges before the organisation.

ABHGYAN 2

It has been observed that some of the JDCs have reached the maturity curve of ownership but still many are far behind. Immature or improper relationship between the newly recruited line managers and Union committee members ; lack of knowledge about our work culture and system of working together – could be the reasons for the same.

Hence a one day training programme “Abhigyan 2” has been prepared for the JDCs by Michael John Centre of Tata Workers Union and Joint Consultations Department. The main objective of the programme is to strengthen the relationship between the line managers and Departmental Committee members in order to focus their attention towards the departmental current and future business plan and converge their potential towards achieving the same jointly through the JDC so that their JDC can reach the stage of Ownership on the maturity curve.

This programme “Abhigyan 2” has been launched by CEO and MD, Tata Steel in the last Michael John Memorial Lecture Meeting and now on the occasion of centenary year of Tata Workers Union, it was rolled out for JDCs. The JDC for Mechanical Maintenance was selected for the first programme which was conducted on 24th of July 2019. Members of the JDC attended the programme.
